These photos were taken around Sep – Oct 2022. I had spent a week in Melbourne during my study leave as a change of scenery. I highly rate Naked for Satan – the rooftop has an awesome view of Fitzroy and the mains are big and delicious. I like to think Melbourne is Sydney’s cooler and more artistic cousin.
I would admit I’m still very much a film photography novice but these are a few of my favourite photos developed and taken by my Ricoh XR-10 camera. I’ve dabbled with film photography for years but only used disposable cameras (why? I will never know). It took me years to realise that I actually wanted to develop my photography skills and disposable cameras weren’t going to cut it. I still use disposable cameras because they’re convenient for travelling and a safe bet but I do want a nice manual point and shoot. I would rather a low quality photo from a disposable camera than one with a manual film camera with its adjustable settings completely out of whack that the photo is rubbish (I’ve been there and it is sad). Disposable cameras are great for taking candid carefree photos at parties and dinners but not so much for capturing landscapes and non-human objects.
However, you don’t become a better film photographer unless you allow yourself to make mistakes. I am excited to keep practising and experimenting and see where this photography journey takes me.
Current listening to Motels by Royel Otis. I’ve recently discovered this band and I’m particularly hooked on this dream pop song. The chorus is so whimsical and nostalgic. Makes for excellent listening at 1:51am.
