It has been a while since I’ve written anything and so the idea occurred to me that I should just strip down to basics. They say that one of the cures for a writer’s block is to just write something. Anything. When I was in school and we had those creative writing activities I would literally write something stupid like ‘I am now writing a sentence’ or ‘This is my stream of consciousness’ but funnily enough, the sentence would eventually lead to somewhere. Next minute, I would be writing descriptive paragraphs about a rainforest.
I thought I would just share a few snippets of my week. I’ve done a fair amount of travelling in the month of July which I have been very fortunate. I embarked on a 2 week solo trip to Singapore and Thailand followed by a week in Melbourne with some friends (which was initially only been to be 4 days before a flight cancellation – absolute blessing in disguise). I still am in the process of going through all that and probably will start drafting a lot of posts about my travels.
As per usual, most of this week I have been occupied with work so not much going on there. On Friday, I saw The Strokes. It was a last-minute spontaneous decision I made the day before and I have absolute no regrets. I think some people find it a bit daring of me to go to gigs by myself. If you’re ever been scared to go to a concert by yourself, you need to just take that leap of faith and realise that all your worries will fade once you’re there. I also think you would massively regret it if it’s an artist you really do want to see. We’re all trying to live a life with no regrets.
The set was electrifying and the atmosphere was fantastic. They played all their hits with the exception of Last Nite but it is what it is. Julian did a shoey (it’s an Australian classic at this point – it’s drinking from a shoe, usually beer, famously seen on F1 legend Daniel Ricciardo). I’ve been listening to The Strokes non-stop since and it’s unlocked some indie rock nostalgia in me. Listening to a lot of Threat of Joy, Someday and The Modern Age (just to name a few).
I finally finished this coming of age novel – Saltwater by Jessica Andrews. It is one of the few novels I’ve thoroughly enjoyed in recent months. It’s written in very short chapters in a non-chronological manner. Usually, I would find it very confusing and disjointed but the prose was just so descriptive, honest and almost poetic that it was a joy to read. The plot revolves around a young Northern woman finding her stride and identity in the world during 2000s/10s England. realising how important the relationships and experiences formed in childhood shape our lives and how to move forward without running from the past. It’s just brilliant millennial nostalgia.
Before my shift on Saturday where I work at a restaurant, I decided to try this little place called Dumplings & Beer in Darlinghurst. The view outside was pretty cute and that’s all the positives I have for this place. Based on my experience, I believe all the staff was incredibly new which is perfectly fine but for some reason, it made my dining experience incredibly awkward. I told the waitress if it could come quicker as I was starting work soon and I heard talks from the kitchen about microwaving (Gordon Ramsey would have an absolute fit – I’ve watched enough Kitchen Nightmares). There’s something a bit uncomfortable going to a restaurant that has no service at a weird time. The dim sums and xiao long bao honestly tasted rather flavourless and definitely to the point I would have rather bought it store bought. An underwhelming disappointment. I think a beer may have helped.
Going back to F1, we’ve now reached the summer break and boy it’s been a very crazy week in F1. From Vettel’s retirement (still crying), to Alonso’s move to Aston Martin (that I first thought was from a parody account and was a joke), to Piastri in talks with McLaren (meaning Alpine could possibly lose Alonso and Piastri within a week – an absolute joke if that happens), that I almost forgot that Ferrari had an absolute disasterclass last weekend. They need to sort this out asap at least for the mental health and wellbeing of all Ferrari fans and for Charles Leclerc who absolutely doesn’t deserve this.
