What I Learnt Having my Makeup Done at Mecca

Have you ever got a makeup lesson at Mecca?

As someone who is probably not the best at makeup or wants to learn new techniques that enhance my features, I’ve always found the idea of a makeup lesson quite useful. I’ve always interested in trying new products if they work for me so I’m completely cool with redeeming product after the makeup lesson at Mecca (around $150). This means that I kind of see the makeover as a (free) pamper session.

Mecca offers makeup lessons curated for you based on your makeup preferences so whether you lean towards more natural or more glam – there is something for you. I also like that Mecca offers a makeup lesson where they go step-by-step applying half your face and allowing you to finish the look with their guidance. This is especially useful for makeup newbies who want to work on their technique and application.

Now, I’ve not actually booked a lesson but I have found the ladies at Mecca are more than willing to lend some time to answer your questions. Don’t be afraid if you want to ask for a touchup or just have a bugging makeup question. I would call it a more informal makeup lesson.

I’ve been able to get makeup quickly done before as I had some spare time and because I wanted to look nicer on a date (which didn’t work). In spite of the short time, I was able to try new products. I bought the Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil because I really liked how ‘sculpted’ they made my brows look and how pigmented and easy the colour payoff was.

The latest time I went to a Mecca store for assistance, I was seeking guidance on what foundations to use on an eczema prone face. I had recently had a sunburn and some of my skin was peeling leaving my makeup application looking horrible and flakey. I was incredibly grateful that the staff who served me had a similar type to me which made her recommendations feel more credible.

She recommended the Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Lightweight Foundation to me. She colour matched it to my skin which was great attention to detail – showing me three different shades on my skin. Honestly, I’m surprised I didn’t discover this foundation sooner. I am absolutely in love with it. It has a really radiant and silky finish. The coverage is lightweight making it breathable and I also like that it has SPF in it.

We also played with blush and learnt a different technique for applying blush. I had never really applying blush to the apples of my cheek. I usually swipe it on my cheekbone but I felt the blush placement on my cheeks lifting upwards was really flattering on me. I’m not too sure on the Hourglass blush shade that was used but I ended up purchasing the holiday palette – Hourglass – Ambient Lighting Edit. If you ask me, it’s definitely a steal. There is this iridescent quality about Hourglass blushes that really make them unique. It’s honestly the blush investment. Pair it with a good blush brush and now you have a chef’s kiss. It’s beautiful.

Before

After

I would only recommend doing this if the store isn’t too busy because I feel slightly bad for the staff taking the time out for me. I also would recommending doing this at a bigger store – the Mecca flagship store at George St Sydney is perfect for this.

Overall, I think Mecca are great at providing makeup lessons and tailoring to your needs. Makeup is such a subjective thing – there really isn’t a one size fits all situation. It’s all about finding what works best for you and having an expert second opinion is always helpful.

However, your experience and my experience will be different depending on the person. In the past, I definitely have been more a pushover and may have kept it to myself if it felt horrible but don’t be shy in voicing your opinion and wants.

A good tip I could leave you with is tell the staff what makeup products you currently use and wear frequently. Mine did ask me this anyway but I think what you learn and try should be an extension to what you already have. Even walking out with a new makeup technique or product is a win for me.

At the end of the day, makeup applications done by Mecca or even Sephora will be very different to getting it done by a professional MUA. A Mecca makeup lesson (although technically not formally) was definitely worth the experience and would recommend it if you are thinking about it.
