So the Sydney lockdown has been officially extended until the end of July earliest. As I predicted, I have not been productive at all. Unless you count watching an entire season of a tv show in one day as productive. If you’re interested I compiled some fun activities (both productive and creative) that you can do at home. It can be very easy to feel like Groundhog Day which is absolutely not how you would want to feel.
Your mental health is so important at this time. Make yourself busy and give yourself a sense of purpose but don’t forget to unwind and relax. Stay strong because we’ll all make it through this together!
So I thought it might be fun to document what I’ve been doing these past few weeks which in the real world is nothing.
I love watching sports and especially as most sporting events I watch are held in Europe, it means late nights and early mornings staying up. As juvenile as it sounds, I like the challenge of staying up as late as I can (as long as I can wake up for work of course). This is especially because in the real world, I am a morning person and lockdown has almost entirely changed my routine.
A massive congratulations to the England football team for having such an amazing tournament. Whilst, it ended in heartbreak, there is nothing but respect and love for the team. Also bear in mind Rashford, Sancho and Saka are 23, 21 and 19 respectively. They’re all younger than me and that is such immense pressure to put in them for taking the biggest penalty kick of their lives. Nothing short of kings.
Watching Love Island
Now this is one that I wasn’t expecting but I am addicted to watching Love Island. I think I’m watching it on a delay as the episodes air the day after in Australia. I would love to know how you’re thinking of this season. Personally, I find all the men quite dull and unlikeable. A lot of them are quite young and come off incredibly immature. My least favourites are Brad, Jake and Liam (man does not look 21 and he hates cats and he’s so bland) and maybe Toby (for having absolutely no backbone and looking like he shouldn’t even be here). Kaz and Liberty are my absolute favourites. Liberty deserves so much more than Jake.
Watching movies that I probably should have seen in my lifetime
I’ve definitely caught up on watching a few movies during this lockdown. I can’t believe I had never seen Pulp Fiction before and I had very high expectations due to what I’ve heard. It is an absolutely amazing film. The dialogue and characters are amazing. I loved the unconventional non-linear storytelling. It leaves you on edge and is just a great witty, dark and funny film.
Another film I really enjoyed was The Truman Show which is a great psychological comedy drama film that highlights how invasive reality tv can be without reality tv not really being a thing until the 2000s. It was truly before its time and really holds up well.
With gyms being closed, I’ve been doing my best to get into a consistent workout routine. My gym has a wide range of pre-recorded classes that I follow. I’ve been doing a lot of strength training, boxing and spin classes. On days that I don’t feel like working out or don’t have much time, I might to a quick barre routine. Barre may look like a low-impact activity that looks like ballet but it works out my legs so much.
It’s week 3 of lockdown and I already find myself slacking so I definitely have to keep up with this.
A simple skincare routine
I’ve been really trying to take care of myself and following a simple skincare routine. My biggest concerns are my oily skin, pores, blackheads and uneven skin texture. I’ve also been following a gua sha routine on most days. I don’t know if it’s done much for shaping my face but I’ve also used it to depuff my eyes and cheeks and leave my skin healthy and glowing. I’ve never really used facial oils until this lockdown but I’m obsessed now.
I’ve been loving using my Sunday Riley products. They are so luxurious to use and I have really been enjoying their facial oils. The UFO Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil works really well for congested and oily skin types. I only have the mini version and you only need the tiniest amount on your face. This is going to last me a long time.
I also love using The Ordinary products they are so affordable and effective. My favourites are their moisturiser and niacinamide. I find that it really reduces breakouts and makes my skin so much brighter.
Watching the 11am daily covid update
Lastly and most importantly, I’ve been watching the daily 11am covid update by NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian. It’s essentially an update of how many covid cases were in the last 24 hours and any new restrictions and updates.
Covid and the lockdown have been on the minds of many Sydneysiders including myself. It has been a difficult and frustrating time. I’m really starting to think this could go in the way of the Melbourne hard lockdown from last year (that lasted for months!). It’s crazy that literally 18 months after the first outbreak, we would still be doing lockdowns for weeks (the Sydney lockdown will be a minimum of 5 weeks).
Seeing events like Wimbledon and the Euro 2020 with massive crowds and packed stadiums and seeing people travel and be out and about definitely gives me FOMO and sadness. England is expected to open up entirely by next week. The majority of Sydneysiders have abided to the rules. We have such low rates of covid compared to other parts of the world but our vaccination rates are so low that it is really setting us back.
