I have been wanting to go to Restaurant Hubert for the longest time. It is famous for its French cuisine, live jazz and is known to be one of the most romantic restaurants in Sydney.
I decided to book this for my birthday this year 3 months in advance. You don’t have to book that far ahead but be warned that availability is very limited. I suppose it’s more of an issue if you book a Friday night or weekend which is exactly what I did.
Restaurant Hubert $$$
15 Bligh St, Sydney NSW 2000 [menu]
The ambience and interior of this restaurant is stunning. You go through endless spiral staircases to go inside to a very postwar France atmosphere with dim lighting, vintage posters and dark wooden furniture. It is a really intimate atmosphere that feels very larger than life. I assure you that once you step into Restaurant Hubert you will feel like you have been transported to a different era of time and history. Enjoy it whilst it lasts.
They also have private dining rooms, a bar and even a theatre. This place is full of hidden secrets and rooms.
I am always indecisive of what to order in restaurants but this time I had no hesitation as I actually read the menu and saw posts on Instagram beforehand so I knew exactly what I wanted.
I highly recommend:
Roe Boat (13)
Sea urchin, trout roe, avruga tart
Escargots XO (28)
Roasted snails, XO butter, Hubert baguette
Prime Beef Tartare (28)
Wagyu beef topside, classic condiments
Pommes Anna (14)
Layered potato, buerre blanc
Those would be my absolute must! In fact not ordering snails at a French restaurant surely must be a crime. I was really pleasantly surprised with the prices. Whilst, Restaurant Hubert gives you classic French fine-dining flair, it’s absolutely not even close to fine dining prices I expected. Could I dare say this was even affordable? I absolutely enjoyed my dinner here. All the food was amazingly delicious. We also ordered drinks as well upon recommendation of the waitress. I tried gin again and it honestly wasn’t too bad. I hate gin (and gin and tonic – don’t come for me) but I think I’m willing to give gin another go.

I was absolutely obsessed with the Roe Boat which I was not expecting. It is really tiny but I had no idea how amazing caviar was. Look how happy I am with my singular roe boat. I kind of wish I put the escargots on my plate instead.
The snails were so amazingly buttery and they gave us a copious amount. I pleasantly love the texture of snails. I know people get grossed out even thinking about it but give it a go. The texture is quite rubbery and reminds me of shrimp/prawn. Don’t forget to dip the baguette in a buttery sauce.
The beef tartare was also delicious and complemented really well with the side of chips. The portion was so generous as well. I heard good things of the Pommes Anna so I knew I wanted to try it. I mean crisp layered potato what is there not to love. Beurre blanc is a white wine butter sauce (hence the blanc). I think I ate this all by myself because this dish came out quite late. No complaints.
We also ordered the Bavette which is 300g of steak with Bordelaise butter. Whilst delicious, it would not be something i would be tempted to get again.
My only regret is that we didn’t get dessert as the guy I was dining with said we’re full? (I also sort of blame the waitress for not being clear in her question but I also blame him for being so quick to answer). Then realised how massively he fucked up when the table behind us got a birthday cake. I was honestly pissed off for at least half an hour haha.
I realise how much better it is when you eat with people who complement you which is most people so I don’t have an issue. However, there are also the picky eaters. The people who don’t go out of their comfort zone. I definitely understand that you can eat whatever you want but I do think it is good to explore and try something new.
I guess that’s why I was so decisive on what I wanted to order. I knew he wouldn’t even touch the snails or tartare despite how much I insisted to give it a go. I guess there was more for me so I can’t complain.
Restaurant Hubert definitely lived up to my expectations and I can’t wait to go again. So I finally eat some dessert. The quality of the food and service is top-notch. I definitely agree with the sentiment that this is one of the most romantic and best restaurants in Sydney.
